(Ramallah-AlummahWorld, Dhu-AlQa'dah 08, 1436, August 23, 2015) Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday stepped down as head of the Executive Committee of the Palestine
Liberation Organization (PLO), according to Palestinian media, dpa report.

Abbas remains president of the Palestinian Authority. According to reports the move will allow for a new committee to be in place when the Palestinian National Council convenes in the coming month. Other members of the 18-person committee resigned along with Abbas.

The PLO's chief negotiator and well-known political figure Saeb Erekat may replace Abbas. In response, the Palestinian National Council called for an election within a month to select a new executive committee for the PLO.

Earlier this week, Palestinian sources reportedly said Abbas, 80, would quit his PLO post which he has for 11 years, along with PLO executive committee members.
Abbas took up the position of the Ramallah-based Palestinian government in 2005, a year after he became the PLO's chief.
