OIC Secretary General Iyad Madani on Visit to Bangladesh

(Jeddah-AlummahWorld, Dhu-AlQa'dah 09, 1436, August 24, 2015) On the first leg of his Asian working tour, the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic cooperation (OIC), Iyad Ameen Madani, called, on Sunday 23 August 2015, on Bangladeshi Prime Minister, H.E. Sheikh Hasina.

During the audience Madani extended an invitation to the Prime Minister to attend the three forthcoming OIC summits, a first one on science and technology, a second on Palestine, and the 13th regular summit conference, OIC press release stated.

H.E. Hasina, for her part, commended the fresh impetus generated by a string of initiatives set in motion by the OIC General Secretariat. The two sides concurred on the pressing need for an OIC-owned conflict-resolution and counter- terrorism mechanism within the Islamic spirit of solidarity and unity of purpose.

During his meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Minister, H.E. Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, the Secretary General expounded on major issues on the OIC agenda, notably the political crises plaguing a number of OIC Member States, countering terrorism, socio-economic hardships and the need for greater solidarity among the Member States to effectively confront these realities. H.E. Minister Mahmoud Ali reiterated his country’s unstinting commitment to the principles driving joint Islamic action and its support for OIC activities.

Madani also conducted a tour of the Dhaka-based International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B), a health research organization dedicated to improving neonatal survival and combating HIV/AIDS. Madani discussed with the senior officials of ICDDR,B the best ways of fostering bilateral collaboration between the Center and OIC institutions.
