(London-AlummahWorld, 29 Rajab,1437 AH, 07 May 2016)Sadiq Khan, a British-Pakistani, became London's first Muslim mayor on Friday, securing a much-needed victory for his opposition Labour Party.

Mr. Khan, a former Labour cabinet minister, became Britain’s most powerful Muslim politician by defeating the Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith by a landslide. He gained more than 1.1 million votes, the single largest mandate for any individual politician in British history.

After securing win Khan wrote a message on his Facebook post. “Today was an amazing victory for hope over fear and for unity over division – and it simply would not have been possible without your help.

This victory is not about me. It’s about the millions of Londoners whose lives we can improve by building more affordable homes, freezing fares, restoring community policing and cleaning up our toxic air.

Thanks to the time, money and support you gave, we were able to overcome a desperate and nasty Tory campaign. We’ve sent a strong message that the politics of fear are not welcome in London.

Now the hard work starts. Let’s make London even better for all Londoners”.

45 years old Sadiq Khan, who grew up in public housing in inner city London, emerged as a landmark winner against Conservative Zac Goldsmith, 41, the son of a billionaire financier.

Anti Islam propaganda and charges of links to radicals were brought up against Sadiq Khan by his main rival and conservatives during the election campaign. Some British media outlets also heated up against the Muslim mayoral candidate but his supporters took social media to reject baseless and hate-speech like objections.

The Conservatives were keen to keep hold of the mayor post, which does not run the City of London financial district but has influence over government in lobbying for the capital. The mayor is responsible for areas such as policing, transport, housing and the environment.

Anti Islam propaganda is a common practice in all kinds of British media and serious accusations against Muslim politicians, sportsmen and religious figures often surface and prevail on all news. Khan was famous as a human rights lawyers and fought several famous cases and won.

Khan`s Labour Party accused Goldsmith and the ruling Conservative Party of smearing Khan.

Poverty and discrimination in education, housing and employment is a common problem of foreign origin British citizen. They often raise question of inequality in the society. But Khan claims he will serve everyone equally. Honor to become mayor of a city like London is a hardest test of Khan`s ability to turn the city towards a society of mutual respect and full of equal  opportunities to all of its resident.
