OIC Secretary General to attend UN session in New York

(Jeddah-AlummahWorld-17 September 2014) The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Iyad Ameen Madani, will be arriving in New York tomorrow, Thursday, 18 September 2014, to attend the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which opens on 24 September. The Annual Coordination Meeting of the OIC Foreign Ministers will be held on the sidelines of the UNGA on 26 September 2014, to coordinate and seek common stands among the OIC's Member States in regard to issues expected to be discussed and debated during the UNGA's session.

In addition, the OIC Contact Group Meetings on Sierra Leone, Somalia, Mali, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Jammu and Kashmir, and on the Rohingya as well as the OIC Committee of the Six on Palestine will also be held on the margins. This year, the Secretary General's special envoys to Myanmar and the Republic of Central Africa, former ministers Sayed Hamid Al-Bar and Cheikh Tidiane Gadio respectively, will attend the relevant contact group meetings.

Also, in a new and reinvigorated approach, three issue-oriented focused meetings will be organized at the OIC's office in New York on human rights, Islamic organizations in the USA and Palestine; as well as a brainstorming session on Islam's perspective and approach to peace building and conflict resolution.

According to OIC statement, a coordination meeting between the OIC, the Arab League, the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Arab Maghreb Union Secretary Generals will also be held to cement coordination and cooperation between the three organisations.

During his participation in the UNGA, the Secretary General is expected to have bilateral meetings with heads of states, foreign ministers, UN high officials including the UN Secretary General and other senior officials of international organizations to discuss issues pertaining to the OIC.
